Waterproof Bag Fabric Specifications: the practical answer

Denier describes yarn linear density, GSM describes mass per unit area, and coating or film specifications describe the water barrier. None of these numbers alone predicts finished-bag durability or water protection. Compare the base fabric, coating system, construction compatibility and evidence under the same conditions, then approve a traceable material sample.

Read the material as a layered specification

A waterproof bag fabric can combine a textile substrate with a coating or laminated film. The textile contributes structure, while the barrier and its attachment influence sealing and handling. A shorthand description such as heavy-duty fabric leaves too many variables unspecified for a repeat order. Ask the supplier to describe the complete material system rather than approving a surface texture.

The material record should identify the base fiber, yarn specification where available, weave, coating or film chemistry, coated sides and finished thickness or mass. Add the chosen color and supplier reference. A carbon-fiber-style texture, for example, is a visual description; it should not be used to imply structural carbon-fiber reinforcement without evidence.

Understand what denier measures

Denier is a yarn linear-density measure: grams per 9,000 meters of yarn. It is not the thickness of the waterproof coating and it is not a finished-product strength rating. A higher yarn number may be relevant to a fabric discussion, but fiber type, weave and finishing still influence the result.

Compare fabrics in the same context. Two descriptions with the same denier can involve different construction and coating systems. Instead of asking only whether one number is better, ask what the material must endure: packing inside a larger bag, repeated deck contact, frequent folding or handling through a rental cycle. Then define the evidence needed for that task.

Use GSM and thickness without confusing their roles

GSM means grams per square meter. Clarify whether a quoted value applies to the base textile, an individual layer or the finished coated material. If one supplier reports only the base and another reports the complete laminate, the numbers are not directly comparable. Ask for the measurement basis and an agreed tolerance where it matters.

Thickness is another useful description, but a thicker sheet does not automatically produce a better bag. Consider flexibility at the roll-top, weight, folded storage and compatibility with the selected construction method. Handle the actual swatch and the assembled sample. Keep a labeled reference so a later material substitution can be reviewed deliberately rather than discovered after production.

Translate durability into observable requirements

Abrasion, tearing, seam behavior and coating adhesion are separate concerns. A buyer should specify which issue matters at the intended contact point. For example, a base resting on rough surfaces needs a different discussion from a top repeatedly folded by the user. Request relevant test methods and conditions before comparing reported results.

Sea to Summit’s published selection guide distinguishes lighter internal-storage materials from more rugged exposed-use products. That shows why application belongs in the material brief; its particular fabric grades are not universal minimums for every manufacturer. For your own range, use the selected construction and the intended exposure to decide what should be evaluated.

Control material changes through the approval process

Create a material approval sheet with a swatch reference, finish description, color reference and the agreed specification. Link it to the finished sample revision. If a substitute is proposed, review its effect on stiffness, weight, printing, closure operation and construction before accepting it as equivalent.

For a DryCross inquiry, send the preferred appearance, application and any material document already available. Add quantities, intended markets and essential performance requirements. This gives the team a basis to review feasible materials without assuming that a single denier or GSM value defines the complete product.

Before you request a quotation

  • Identify fiber, weave, coating and coated sides.
  • State whether GSM refers to base or finished material.
  • Keep labeled swatches and sample revisions.
  • Evaluate substitutes against the intended construction.

Frequently asked buyer questions

Does higher denier always mean a better dry bag?

No. Denier is one description of the yarn. The weave, coating, assembly, application and measured results also influence suitability. Compare the complete specification.

Are GSM and coating thickness interchangeable?

No. GSM measures mass per area, while thickness measures a dimension. Both need a clearly stated measurement basis and should be interpreted with the layer structure.

Is textured PVC the same as carbon-fiber fabric?

A texture can imitate a carbon-fiber appearance without using structural carbon fibers. Use accurate material wording and confirm the substrate and coating with the supplier.
